about

On the making of “this next Ohio”:

This album originated from an unusual place (for me). I was asked by the poet Darren C. Demaree, a longtime friend of mine, to provide some music for a podcast about parenting that would accompany his forthcoming book of poems addressed to his children, 'a child walks in the dark'. In what seems my typical way lately I counter-offered: I would provide not merely some interstitial music for the podcast, but instead a full-length album that he could plunder at will. Further, it would be inspired directly by his book of poems. Send me the book and I’ll do the rest, I more or less said. He sent. I read. I am well familiar with Darren’s work, but this particular book, his sixteenth, I believe, hit me differently.

At the start of the summer of 2021, my wife and I had just finished an extremely stressful year of simultaneously working remotely full-time and helping our two sons attend school from home, one of whom was in kindergarten. Every experience we had had in the past year, good or bad, had been amplified by our constant proximity to them. I’ll admit to more than my share of angry outbursts and moments of self-doubt, brought on by stress, the situation, the world, and mainly, myself. My outbursts were an attempt to communicate, in urgency, the multitude of emotions I was experiencing daily, sometimes hourly. I was leaving little room for nuance, or respect for the complexity of the situation and the people in it. Darren’s book is in some ways a similar attempt, but it’s far more successful. It takes its time and explores. It articulates. It focuses, surprises, elevates, and moves. I made those qualities my list of goals for this album. And to that end, I did something I haven’t done on a Pagination release so far: I let others a little bit in on the process, including my wife and our two children. It was an experience I found extremely rewarding and I'll continue it going forward. Each song title is a line that I took from Darren's book...these in turn directly inspired the creation of the songs. I am deeply grateful to Darren for sharing his work with me, to my family for taking part and for putting the hell up with me, and to the other fine artists who contributed: Ehule, Craig Colorusso, and my partner in Home Learning and creator of the exquisite project Screener, Edmund Osterman. Thank you all so much. “This next Ohio is all yours.”
